The New Orleans Saints signed veteran free agent safety Lance Schulters today after bringing the 10-year NFL veteran in for a workout Sunday. Schulters first entered the league as a fourth-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers out of Hofstra University in 1998 and has also played with the Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons.

Schulters practiced with his new teammates for the first time Monday afternoon and Head Coach Sean Payton gave him a good initial review.

“Pretty good,” Payton responded when asked how Schulters looked in his first Saints session. “I won’t know until we see the tape, but for his first day I thought he handled things pretty well. He’s been around enough to pick up defenses pretty quickly.”

Payton said he expects the former Pro Bowler (1999 with San Francisco) to compete at both safety spots.

“He’s a veteran safety,” said the coach. “He gives us some experience and some versatility in that he can play either strong or free safety. That’s the first thing that we saw in him and he’s in pretty good shape.”

To make room for Schulters, the Saints waived rookie long snapper Ryan Senser, keeping the number of players on the active roster at the NFL limit of 80.
