Saints Place Gleason on Injured Reserve

The Saints announced Wednesday that they have placed safety Steve Gleason on the Reserve/Injured list. Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced the roster move that rules Gleason out for the 2007 season.
Gleason, in his seventh season in the NFL and with the Saints, underwent surgery on his right knee in June and missed the entirety of the club’s offseason program.
Over six seasons with the team, Gleason has played in 83 games and made a big impact on special teams with 98 tackles, four blocked punts – including one that was recovered for a touchdown in the 2006 home opener against Atlanta – and two fumble recoveries in kick coverage.
“Steve is a guy that understands his role and that's been real important to our team and organization,” Head Coach Sean Payton said of Gleason earlier this year. “There have been a number of plays where he's been instrumental in our success on special teams - the obvious was the first home game last year. He's meant a lot to this team and he's got the respect of the players and the organization and our coaching staff."
The Saints open training camp Friday morning with an 8:50 a.m. practice, carrying 85 players on the active roster including five NFL Europa exemptions.
